Curses – Proverbs 26:2
Anna Sayce considers herself an “intuitive” (psychic?), but she has a warning about bad psychics: “Sometimes people write to me because a ‘psychic’ has told them that they have been cursed and that they need to pay a fee to remove it. This happens a lot online, especially when free readings are advertised – you hand over your email address and the person gives you a general cold reading that is sent out to everyone. You think it might be real. Then the intuitive starts to harass you day after day, telling you that you’re cursed and for $50 they’ll remove the curse. These ‘psychics’ are scammers. This has happened to me online several years ago (I got hounded every day by a psychic who wanted to convince me I was cursed) and it’s what often happens when you enter your email address into a form for a free reading.”
Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, a curse that is causeless does not alight. (Proverbs 26:2, ESV)
Watching a sparrow or swallow flitting and flying about is quite a spectacle. They do alight but their alighting is so light it is almost of no effect on its perch. Watch, however, a hawk or a big raven or a vulture alight and there is a big difference. The curse that is baseless is like the sparrow. God will not allow it to have any impact.
Does that mean God will allow a legitimate curse to land like a vulture in your life? Perhaps. Those who utter curses against others do not have magical power in themselves, though some would have you believe so. They are uttering something negative against you in hopes that what they utter will come true, but only God can determine whether someone’s judgment is true and whether someone needs to be judged or not.
If God’s judgment and that of the curser aligns then the thing spoken may come to pass if He agrees on the mode of judgment. But we need not fear anyone’s curse if we are walking in wisdom and godliness. In fact, we have an even greater power in such cases. As Jesus taught us, we can bless those who curse us (Luke 6:28).
If we are living a life of love, the perfect love of the Father, loving even our enemies, no curse can ever have power against us. Love is the greater power.
