I Have Much to Write to You – 2 John 1:12,13
John finishes his short letter with the prospect of more that he wants to share with this congregation, but that he wants to share it in person. Sometimes a letter is to be preferred, as when Paul, in 2 Corinthians, chooses to write instead of visit (2 Corinthians 2:1-4). A wise person knows when to use whatever kind of communication, even text or email, and when not to.
Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. Instead I hope to come to you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete. The children of your elect sister greet you. (2 John 1:12-13 ESV)
John reserves the rest of what he wants to say for an intended visit. There are some things better said in person. But the goal of all Christian conversations should be joy in our great God and His great Savior. We have Him in common. We are elect members of His kingdom and it is coming. And so we greet one another as family.
