I Lift Up My Soul – Psalm 25:1-7
I am ashamed of so many of my Evangelical friends who have lifted up their souls to a political party or a politician. They have looked to human deliverers to right the wrongs in our nation and restore us to “what we used to be.” The psalmist had made another commitment.
To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame; they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.
Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.
Remember your mercy, O LORD, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O LORD! (Psalm 25:1-7 ESV)
I am a sinner and I have enemies, and the great enemy, Satan. I could lift up my soul to, direct my desire for deliverance to, another human being, my own resourcefulness, or a false god. But Yahweh, the only true God, moved in my soul, out of His own steadfast love, to show me His paths, forgive my sins, and bring me salvation. So it is in Him I will trust, Him I will wait for all day long and for however long it takes to see His deliverance from the enemies of my soul. I will resist the temptation to engineer my own escape or to despair of an answer. I will look to Him to lead me in His truth and teach me what I need to know.
