Into Your Hands I Commit My Spirit – Psalm 31:3-5

It is fun to think of God as our fortress.  You can imagine awe-inspiring citadels of strength that no enemy could assail (like here, here, and here).

For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me; you take me out of the net they have hidden for me, for you are my refuge.  Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God.  (Psalm 31:3-5 ESV)

David is experiencing a time of discipline from God (vv.9,10) but is trusting God to deliver him from his enemies.  God is our rock against which the waves of trouble pound but do not destroy, our fortress who shields us from all attacks.  Because we are in covenant relationship with Him through Jesus Christ, He leads and guides us for His name’s sake and rescues us.  With confidence we entrust our spirits to Him to redeem us from trouble.

Jesus and Stephen quoted verse 5 at the moment of death.  At death our spirits separate from our bodies and this is the ultimate moment of trusting God to care for us.  His hand is mighty to save and we can commit our spirits into His hands with confidence that He will carry us to our eternal home by His side.
