Learning From God’s Creation – Proverbs 30:24-28
Ligonier Ministries describes the rock badger for us: Rock badgers are small creatures about the size of a hare. They live among the rocks surrounding the Dead Sea and in other rocky locales in Palestine and Syria. God has specially designed them for this habitat. Ordinarily, their small size would make them quite vulnerable to predators, but their clawed, almost weblike feet and footpads enable them to scurry about the rocks with ease, hiding in holes and small caves that are inaccessible to larger creatures that might want to make these badgers their food.
Four things on earth are small, but they are exceedingly wise: the ants are a people not strong, yet they provide their food in the summer; the rock badgers are a people not mighty, yet they make their homes in the cliffs; the locusts have no king, yet all of them march in rank; the lizard you can take in your hands, yet it is in kings’ palaces. (Proverbs 30:24–28, ESV)
These small yet wise creatures can teach us wisdom from God. The ants prepare for the winter by getting food in summer, so that when winter comes and there is no food, they are provided for. The rock badgers find safety in difficult terrain. The locusts can do little by themselves, but, because they work together, accomplish much. And the lizard finds luxurious accommodations because they take small roles.
It is wise to provide for your future (insurance, friendships, savings, etc.). It is wise to provide for safety (also a provision for the future). It is wise to maintain unity with those around you to accomplish much. It is wise to be able to fit in to important places in a small way.
