My Eyes Are not Raised Too High – Psalm 131

One of the things David knew was “too high” for him was that God knew everything about him (Psalm 139:6).  It put him off, scared him, because he felt under the constant judgment of God.  Here, not raising his eyes too high means he is not trying to take God’s place and figure out how everything should work.  This is not a statement against thinking, far from it.  But it is a recognition that our minds are limited whereas His is not.

A Song of Ascents. Of David.

O LORD, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.  But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.

O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time forth and forevermore.  (Psalm 131 ESV)

I am not haughty or proud, Lord, nor do I pretend or expect to understand Your purposes in the earth.  Instead, I am like the little child who is content to sit in his mother’s lap, calm and quiet because I trust completely in your care for me and in your wisdom. From now on and forever I will put all my hope in You.
