One Thing I Have Asked – Psalm 27:4,5
David didn’t want to literally live in the temple. He had his own palace for dwelling. But, in a figurative way, he could dwell in Yahweh’s house relationally. He could have intimate relationship with God and be like God’s house guest as long as he lived.
One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple.
For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. (Psalm 27:4,5 ESV)
To be Yahweh’s house guest is to be under His protection and in His fellowship. We dwell in His house by seeking relationship with Him in prayer and worship. We use His word to draw us to Him and we “gaze” upon His beauty in worship and can inquire of Him as any house guest would do.
And when trouble comes He hides us, guaranteeing our safety from enemies, like Rahab did the spies of Israel. He puts our feet on solid rock so that our footing is sure and we triumph over our enemies. Even if they take our lives we have the victory.
