Searching for Wisdom – Proverbs 2:1-5

For forty bucks Dick’s Sporting Goods will sell you a gold panning kit.  Then you can go to Geology.com and read their instructions on how to pan and watch their videos of people panning.  They’ll say its easy, but as you listen you realize this is hard work.

My son, if you receive my words

and treasure up my commandments with you,

making your ear attentive to wisdom

and inclining your heart to understanding;

yes, if you call out for insight

and raise your voice for understanding,

if you seek it like silver

and search for it as for hidden treasures,

then you will understand the fear of the LORD

and find the knowledge of God. (Proverbs 2:1-5, ESV)

How badly do you want to be wise?  Because if you really want it you can have it.  Here is how to tell if you really want it:

  • You put yourself in the company of the wise and you listen to them and treat their words like treasure.
  • You listen for wisdom wherever you can find it.
  • You get loud about wanting it, not embarrassed to raise your hand if you don’t understand something or to appeal to God in prayer out loud for it.
  • You do the work of a miner, digging down deep for hidden gold, not expecting it to just fall in your lap.

If this is your attitude and action you will understand the fear of Yahweh, the beginning of all knowledge, and getting to know Him you will find yourself becoming more like Him.  Wisdom is godliness, being like God.
