To You I Lift My Eyes – Psalm 123

In Psalm 120 the pilgrim lifted up his eyes to the hills of Jerusalem, an indirect way of saying he was looking to Yahweh.  But here, he speaks more directly, looking to Yahweh whose throne, represented in Jerusalem as the temple, is in the heavens.  Who do you look to when in distress?

A Song of Ascents.

To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens!  Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he has mercy upon us.

Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.  Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.  (Psalm 123 ESV)

Those who have made much money and who feel it is because of their own ability are contemptuous of those who believe that Yahweh is the source of all our needs.  They pour out contempt on believers and the believers suffer for it.  But the believers look toward their Master to provide mercy and relief from the contempt.  From His heavenly throne He will send help.
