What are the duties of the head of the household?

Question: With married couples. What are the duties of the head of household (the husband). Scripture related.

My reply: The head of the house, the husband, is expected to lead his family with grace and understanding, caring more about their needs than his own, wanting to hear their opinions more than voice his own, learning what the special needs of each individual are in order to better lead them, and helping each family member achieve his or her own personal greatness. A good leader leads, he does not push. He sets the example more than preaches or demands. He consistently asks God for help in this task and listens to God and especially the voice of his wife when making decisions. He does not consider himself the expert on all matters but yields to the expertise his wife brings to the table, and maybe even the expertise of his children. But always he determines the course of his family in line with the revealed will of God as found in the Scriptures. He should certainly have access to mentors and accountability partners who help keep him from being a petty dictator or a door mat non-leader. He must have a vision from God for his family and trust God to bring them around to his vision. If, in the process they help shape that vision, all the better.
