Who Is Like Yahweh Our God – Psalm 113
This is the first of the Hallel psalms (Psalms 113-118). In Israelite worship they were sung at Passover, after the morning sacrifice, chanted in the synagogue for Sukkot (Tabernacles), Hanukkah, and the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost). It is not recited on Rosh Ha Shanah (New Years) or the Day of Atonement, because these occasions are considered too solemn, and these psalms are too happy.
Praise the LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD!
Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and forevermore! From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the LORD is to be praised!
The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens! Who is like the LORD our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the LORD! (Psalm 113 ESV)
God’s name deserves to be praised around the globe. His glory is beyond compare. He sits on high far above the earth. Nevertheless, He knows our condition intimately and takes the lowliest ones and raises them to a position of relative glory. The needy become prosperous and the barren woman joyful with children. Praise Yahweh!
