Yahweh Is My Shepherd/Host – Psalm 23
This is a psalm of trust. It is carried by two metaphors. The Shepherd/sheep relationship comprises the first four verses. In verses four and five, the switch from speaking third person (“He”) to second person (“You”) signals the change in metaphors. Verses 5-6 speaks of the Host/guest relationship. Intepretations that seek to carry the shepherd/sheep metaphor throughout the entire psalm miss the mark.
A Psalm of David.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. (Psalm 23 ESV)
David has discovered that when facing dangers his protector and provider is Yahweh and he can trust Him completely. Like a shepherd, Yahweh will care for him, taking him to those places where he experiences peace even in the midst of danger and leading him on the path of right living that leads to life. Like a hospitable host, Yahweh will guarantee his safety in His house, providing for his needs even as the enemy is held at bay outside, and he has assurance that Yahweh will never make him leave His house of safety.
