Yahweh Reigns – Psalm 93
Here begins a series of psalms (93-99) linked by the theme of Yahweh’s coming as King and His judging of the peoples. Many repeat the phrase, “Yahweh reigns.” The rule of God on earth is conceived of in two ways: (1) His present rule, in which, however, many of His subjects live in open defiance, and (2) His coming rule which will deal with all those who are in rebellion and establish a perfect kingdom in which righteousness rules entirely.
The LORD reigns; he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed; he has put on strength as his belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.
The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their roaring. Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty!
Your decrees are very trustworthy; holiness befits your house, O LORD, forevermore. (Psalm 93 ESV)
God is in control of all creation, His power and eternal life enabling Him to establish the world and His own throne or rule over it so that it is constantly maintained. Even the powerful chaotic oceans are not as mighty as Yahweh. And as the moral center of the universe, Yahweh’s decrees can be counted on to be always righteous and perfect. He is the Holy God.
