Your Commandment Makes Me Wiser – Psalm 119:97-104
There are personal benefits to knowing God’s Word.
Mem
Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts. I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word. I do not turn aside from your rules, for you have taught me. How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. (Psalm 119:97-104 ESV)
The whole of Psalm 119 is an acrostic based on the Hebrew alphabet. This section is based on mem, the Hebrew consonant ‘m’ and each verse in the Hebrew starts with it. If I were to write this section based on our alphabet ‘m’ it might go like this:
Meditation on Your law all day is testimony to how much I love Your law.
More wise than my enemies your commandment makes me, for it is ever with me.
More understanding than my teachers it gives me because I meditate on it.
More understanding than the aged it gives me because I keep it.
Move my feet away from every evil way so I can keep your word.
My path is fixed on your rules because You have taught me.
More sweet than honey are your words to me.
My understanding comes from your precepts and so I hate every false way.
